Vincenzo Bellini's final lyrical work continues the musical evolution of the young Italian composer who has been engaged since his previous seminal works, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, La Sonnambula and Norma. The exceptional sense of melody and lyricism, which reached its peak in I Puritani, has become a true signature of Bellini and distinguishes him from Donizetti and Rossini in particular. The undeniable romantic flavor of this opera owes much to the inspired libretto by the Scottish poet Walter Scott. The orchestral tone and the vocal writing reinforce this feeling. The young Basque tenor Xabier Anduaga, who has already made a name for himself at the Paris Opera in the recent Barber, will play the role of Arturo alongside an Elvira played by the impressive Jessica Pratt, one of the most talented belcantist of her generation. A sublime vocal feast, "Opera must make audiences weep, tremble and die", said Bellini. On that night, we will weep and tremble with emotion without any shadow of a doubt.
