It is impossible to ever tire of performing or hearing Le Nozze di Figaro, as each page oozes the genius of Mozart and Da Ponte. It features five characters torn between desire and duty, although Suzanne appears to be less troubled by the dilemma experienced by Figaro as the Count and the Countess as Chérubin. The whole work is developed around this depiction of love and social conventions, and perhaps here in particular, the virtuosity of Mozart’s vocal score for recitative, arias, and ensembles alike. Mozart is unique yet universal, and this is a masterclass in recitare, an Italian word which means “acting”.
