Haydn Symphony No.104 Hob. I:104 « London »
Taking French leave is not the kind of thing Scotsman Douglas Boyd does. After handing over to Lars Vogt, he returns to the orchestra as guest conductor to welcome a distinguished soloist: Anne Gastinel. A figure of the French cello, she has chosen two baroque concertos full of colour and emotion. A travelling musician from Italy to Spain, Boccherini, himself a cellist, makes us hear all the richness and possibilities of his instrument; as for Vivaldi, he delivers in his Concerto for two cellos one of his most vibrant compositions. To round off this evening dedicated to contrasts, a dialogue between styles and eras, with two works, also British, by Elgar and George Benjamin, and Haydn’s "London" symphony, a page of capital importance in every respect.
