L'Elisir d'amore, which is considered to be among the finest examples of an opera buffa in the bel canto repertoire, has also been Donizetti’s most popular opera for many years. This romantic comedy pleasingly blends an effective comedic libretto with beautiful scoring. The plot is straightforward: the young villager Nemorino is in love with Adina, a rich and beautiful heiress. In order to seduce her, he buys a love potion which turns out to be nothing more than wine. After many twists and turns, the course of true love finally runs smooth for the two lovebirds. The creators of this new version for a youth audience have opted to set it in a factory producing a cordial which children hate. In this world reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times and Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, who will dare to change the recipe and transform it into a delicious fruit drink?
