Haydn  Sonata No. 49 Hob. XVI:49
    Schumann  Davidsbündlertänze Op. 6
    Schubert  Sonata No. 21 D. 960

After an introductory piece by Haydn, Sunwook Kim invites us to delve into two of the most beautiful groups of pieces for piano, beginning with the Davidsbündlertänze Opus. 6 by Schumann. It is one of the most daring and modern groups of pieces, informed both by his love for Clara and a type of rebellion against tradition writing schemes for piano, which give it this incredibly modern feel. Schubert’s Sonata D. 960 is quite different. It was the musician’s last major composition before his death two months later. Although it is not a dark work, every page is permeated by an unmistakable sense of resignation and calm. A poignant melody pervades this instrumental swansong from beginning to end.
