The Sokolov ritual – a programme announced at the last minute and six encores – is a tradition set in stone.

    Programme to be announced

Who are the acknowledged models for tonight’s iconic performer? Firstly, Emil Gilels, who awarded him first prize in the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition when he was sixteen years old. But also Rachmaninov, Sofronitsky, Gould, and Lipatti, whose recordings he devoured as a young man. Like his illustrious forbears, he has written his way into musical history by adopting the robust technique of some and the unusualness and perfectionism of others, and has the full repertoire for his instrument at his fingertips. We are of course describing Grigory Sokolov, who will only reveal his programme at the last minute and will perform six spontaneous encores on the day. There is always a unique ritual to these concerts where “the audience feels the formidable intensity of the physical, pianistic musical and emotional presence of the most private pianist of our day”. (Bruno Monsaingeon).
