Charpentier In Nativitatem H. 416 and other sacred pieces

Sung in French and latin

Charpentier’s legacy as a composer, but also a singer (high tenor), includes a significant corpus of vocal works, three-quarters of which are in the sacred music genre. Pastorales on the Nativity were a very common genre in the 17th century and often combined the text from Holy Scripture with profane elements from the pastorale genre and bucolic touches. This could not be further removed from the gilt and ostentation of the court of Versailles and everything is designed to allow the musical emotion to develop in the “tendre” or sentimental register. The Ensemble Correspondances has restored this rare work to its former glory on vinyl prior to bringing it back to life on the concert stage.
